The Alexander Bulldogs overcame adversity after a rough loss to San Antonio Marshall last week.
The Bulldogs were missing two starters — running back Joe Fernandez and right tackle Luis Garcia — as they took the Gregory-Portland Wildcats on the road Friday. But losing two of their biggest workhorses didn’t faze the Navy & Gold as they came out firing, claiming a 23-6 victory for their first win of the season.
Alexander’s offense was led by running back Gael Rubio as he scored three touchdowns and well exceeded 100 yards. The junior was extremely poised in his first start.
“I play for my teammates who wish they could play, but can’t because of injury and that pushes me to play hard,” Rubio said.
When asked who he gives credit to, Rubio quickly mentioned his coaches and offensive line. Rubio is a name you should remember as he opened many eyes and defenses will have to worry about two elite running backs in Alexander’s backfield.
Not only was the offense on point, but the defense was phenomenal as it only allowed six points and secured three turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble.
Gregory-Portland seemed outmatched as the physicality of the Bulldogs brought to the table was too much for the Wildcats to handle. If Alexander plays the way it did this past Friday, it could compete for a district title this season.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday, Sept. 13, as they’ll host Boerne-Champion in their home opener.
