Unstoppable Alexander seniors secure District 30-6A title

Every senior dreams of leaving their last home game with a victory. They know this will be the last time they suit up in front of their home crowd and a victory would be the cherry on top for the regular season.

The Alexander senior class, which includes Emily Buitron, Mariajose Cosio, Stella Evans, Angie Garcia, Andrea Nunez, and Bella Ramirez, has led for the past two years as the hottest team in Laredo and they simply know how to win.

In their last home game of their high school careers, the Class of 2025 led Alexander to a victory over LBJ and, for the second year in a row, the District 30-6A title. Alexander claimed the District 30-6A title without dropping a single set for the past two seasons.

“That was one of our goals this season,” Alexander head coach Ari Bermea-Mendoza said of winning the district title. “With so many returners coming back, we knew it was something that we could accomplish as a team. We knew that it was not going to be easy; we made it an emphasis, weekly, to stay focused on the goal and do what we need to do to reach that goal.”

Alexander celebrated winning the District 30-6A title with Queen’s song “We Are the Champions” blaring in the background as they took team and family pictures. Bermea-Mendoza thanked the seniors and their families for their contributions to the program.

It was a bittersweet moment for Bermea-Mendoza, who said she was not going to cry because they have more things to accomplish in the season.

Three Alexander seniors have been with Bermea-Mendoza for the past four years. The four-year lettermen are Buitron, Evans, and Nunez. The trio leave their high school careers with a 39-2 district record, with one game left in the regular season for the Lady Bulldogs when they take on United on Tuesday.

“This is something we have worked hard for during the entire year, not just during volleyball season,” Buitron said. “I honestly did not know we were 39-2 in district play, but the mission is not complete; we have one more district game to go.”

Nunez, who is set to join the University of Texas-Arlington next fall, is excited to win her second district title of her high school career.

“It feels awesome to win the district title on our home court,” Nunez said. “I have been here in the program for four years and to be able to celebrate this win with the entire program is such an amazing honor.”

This marks the first time the Alexander seniors have had an opportunity to celebrate a district championship in front of their home crowd. Last year, Alexander clinched the district title at United.

“I am so grateful that we were able to do it as a team, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. It is the first time done while I am a senior because it has not been done in a lot of years,” Evans said. “I am very happy for the opportunity that I get to experience this with the people that I love.”
