Cristina Garcia sets new UISD triple jump record

Cristina Garcia, a junior at Laredo Alexander High School, has etched her name into the annals of United Independent School District athletics by setting a new district record in the triple jump. At the season's inaugural meet, Garcia achieved a remarkable leap of 37 feet, 10 inches, surpassing the previous district record of 36 feet, 5 inches, which she set last year.

Reflecting on her record-breaking performance, Garcia expressed her astonishment.

"I was surprised to break my record on the opening jump of the season. Going into the meet, the record wasn’t the focus; however, executing my best performance and setting new personal records is always part of the competition plan. It was definitely a great feeling to experience with my coaches, family and teammates," Garcia said.

Garcia's journey to this achievement has been marked by a rigorous and diverse training regimen. In preparation for the season, she participated in Amateur Athletic Union competitions and an indoor season, training under multiple coaches who provided invaluable mentorship and guidance.

Balancing multiple events—including the triple jump, long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles—requires meticulous planning and dedication. Garcia credits her coaches for their strategic approach.

"My coaches do a great job of finding the common aspects of my events. They make sure to focus on technical work for each event while also building overall strength and endurance. Recovery is also key; I make sure to stay on top of things like my nutrition and rest," Garcia said.

When approaching competitions, Garcia maintains a focused and fearless mindset.

"Going into my events, the main thing on my mind is to be aggressive and not hold anything back for any reason. With every jump or race, there’s no time for hesitation or second-guessing. I remind myself to trust in my training and execute the plan to the best of my ability for that particular event," Garcia said.

Central to Garcia's motivation is her father, whom she describes as her biggest supporter.

"Without a doubt, my biggest motivator and supporter is my dad. He’s always been by my side at every training, track meet in town, out of town, out of state even. He works incredibly hard to provide for me and my sister and, without fail, always makes the time to be there for me in every good moment, sad moment and everything in between. He pushes me to be the best I can possibly be and ultimately just wants to see me succeed in my dreams of running track and field at the Division I college level," Garcia said.

Garcia's exceptional performance at the season's first meet was not limited to the triple jump. She also secured victories in the long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the sport.

As she continues her high school career, Garcia remains a formidable force in track and field, embodying the spirit of determination and excellence.
