Alexander hires Rene Rodriguez as new boys' basketball coach

Alexander High School has announced a vibrant new chapter for its boys basketball program with the appointment of Rene Rodriguez Jr. as the new head coach. The announcement was shared with a spirited post on the school’s Instagram page.

"BulldogNation!! We want to Congratulate & Welcome Home, Coach Rene Rodriguez Jr. as our New Boys Head Basketball Coach," the post stated. "We are excited to have coach back at the Dawg Pound!! Coach Rodriguez is a Bulldog Alumni!!"

The hire brings a sense of homecoming and pride, with Rodriguez being an Alexander High School alumnus. After honing his skills and coaching at LBJ High School, where he was celebrated for his strategic leadership and ability to connect with players, Rodriguez returns to the Dawg Pound — a place that holds deep personal and professional meaning.

Rodriguez now takes over the head coaching position after Luis Valdez retired from the role he had held since 1994. Rodriguez was hired at LBJ in June 2022 and was the girls head basketball coach at Martin for four years before that.

Valdez led Alexander to 25 straight postseason appearances while amassing 614 career wins and 10 district championships, including this year's title. The Bulldogs had 14 bi-district titles, nine area titles, five Sweet 16 appearances and two Elite Eight appearances in 2007 and 2015 under Valdez.
